After five years working on the vegetable garden in our farm 'El Labrao', we noticed it demands a lot of energy to care it, basically due to the distance between the garden and our house -about 1 km or 15 min. walking. So, last year we bought a piece of land -about 1500 m2- attached to our house and we moved the vegetable garden to this new land. The first we did was a well and we built a little tank to store and irrigate the new garden.
We are transforming the old vegetable garden into a forest garden progressively, putting a lot of trees (walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, fig trees) and evergreen edible bushes (artichokes, asparagus, "alcaparreras").
Thanks to the new design we save much energy taking care to the garden and the harvest is better than before; for example we have harvested more than 100 watermelons this year!
When you read about permaculture and the theory of sectors and zones you don't give the appropriate importance to it. This is so because nowadays is easy to do things with machines; for example, in large cities like Madrid is common for anyone to move 50 kms. or more per day!
Probably in a close post I will explain the design made for build the well to maximize the underground water the well holds.
